The Athletic journalist David Ornstein has provided a detailed update on Liverpool’s pursuit of Florian Wirtz.
It has been about a month now since Liverpool’s interest in the 22-year-old was reported and a lot has happened since then and there has been constant update on the situation from several reliable sources.
As it stands, what we know is that Liverpool want Wirtz and the player himself wants to move to Anfield.
We also know that he turned down a more lucrative offer from Bayern Munich after being impressed by Arne Slot’s plan for him.
Additionally, Liverpool and Wirtz have agreed on personal terms and the Reds have entered negotiations with Bayer Leverkusen over the transfer.
The Premier League champions have submitted two bids so far, with the second proposal worth approximately €130 million (£109.4 million), which represents a significant increase from their initial bid that exceeded €100 million.
However, despite the delay in striking a deal quickly, it is believed both clubs remain optimistic that a deal can be reached in the coming days as negotiations continue.
With negotiations entering a crucial stage this week, David Ornstein has now provided an update on the situation.
According to the journalist, Wirtz’s transfer to Liverpool could end up breaking the record for the most expensive buy in British football history.
“Bayer Leverkusen want a higher figure, and so if and when Liverpool do edge up, it could well be a British record transfer fee should this get over the line,” the journalist said.
“Where things are now is that this is progressing in the right direction.
The talks are ongoing.”
The journalist also revealed that the deal that will bring Wirtz to Anfield is potentially being concluded, and its final stages.
“I think they’re now on to the stage of potential add-ons, the make-up of the deal, the bonuses, and how they would be achieved,” he added.
“So it’s clearly at an advanced stage, but from what I hear, it’s not quite at the finish line yet.
But for Liverpool and their supporters, there’s reason to be optimistic?
I do think they are going to get this deal done, not only because they’re pushing so hard in the club-to-club negotiations, but also the desire of Wirtz.”
